County staff and volunteers at the animal shelter work hard to save the animals being housed at the shelter. Every effort is made to find a home for the many dogs and cats that pass through the shelter each year. To accomplish this, the animals are promoted on the radio, in the local newspaper, on the Internet through Petfinder and on Facebook to reunite them with their owners and if not, to hopefully find a new appropriate home.

Hard work and determination have resulted in a live release rate of 96% in 2018. We would like to increase that rate. A low cost spay/neuter program is available to area residents and to individuals adopting from the Amelia Animal Shelter. The program is sponsored by the Amelia Patrons for Animal Welfare (APAW) Group. Citizens may obtain the spay/neuter application by visiting the APAW website.

The Animal Shelter will accept dogs and cats from its owner at no charge for Amelia County residents. These animals must be brought to the shelter during regular shelter hours. All forms for the surrender are available at the shelter and must be completed before the animals can be accepted.
