NewsTraining Exercise Posted on: 10/14/2009 09:46 AM Fire Department Training ExerciseThe Amelia County Volunteer Fire Department hosted the Virginia Dept. of Fire Programs’ Vehicle Rescue Awareness and Operations course on October 10-11, 2009. Twenty-two Amelia County firefighters gave up their weekend to attend this 16 hour course. Three additional firefighters assisted with logistics for this course over the weekend. While most Amelia residents enjoyed one of the last warm weekends of the summer, these men and women volunteered their time to learn the latest techniques in vehicle extrication so that they will be better prepared to respond to emergencies within Amelia County. This course was designed for Fire and Rescue personnel with basic and intermediate experience in vehicle rescue. Classroom and practical evolutions alerted students to new hazards associated with today’s vehicles. Time was spent on how the laws of physics affect the vehicle and its passengers and the outcome this has on tactical considerations. Emphasis was placed on the development of safe and proficient techniques for vehicle stabilization and lifting, and in the use of air bags and hydraulic systems (such as the “Jaws of Life”).
